TRAVELS: AYAMONTE, SPAIN

During our stay in Monte Gordo, Portugal in The Algave, we decided to take a ferry trip across to the Ayamonte, a town in Spain.

The journey from Portugal to Spain took no time at all, less than 15 minutes and buying the ferry ticket, which cost €1.80 was quite straight forward. We just turned up at the ticket office and bought a ticket. When we set off in the morning, it was quite cold and breezy, so I was wearing a my jumper in scarf but it soon warmed up, for reference, we were travelling in mid April.

We arrived to a peaceful ferry port. Ayamonte belongs to the province of Huelva, Andalusia. It is located near the Spanish/Portuguese border on the mouth of the Guadiana River.

From the ferry terminal, we followed the crossed the street towards the ferry ticket office and found some streets which led us to some shops and a square. It was quite straight forward.

There were lots of orange trees everywhere. I was told though the oranges from the trees are very bitter.

There was lovely architecture everywhere.

We stopped for something to eat at one of the restaurants. Most of what I could see in the restaurants was pretty similar, I didn’t notice a huge variety of cusines.

We walked a bit further away from the shops and came across a different part of the waterfront from which we had arrived.

We turned down one of the pedestrianised streets and came across this church. It is one of those places where you come across little hidden gems at every turn.

I love the tiles on the stairs we would come across.

There is a lot to explore in Ayamonte, we were only the for a day but we enjoyed the day having a wander around the area next to the ferry port. It’s definitely worth the ferry ride across if you are staying in one of the nearby towns in Portugal like Monte Gordo.

To get back to Portugal, we bought a ferry ticket from the ticket office which opens 15 minutes before the ferry departure time. The ticket one way was 2,30 Euros. Also, one thing to remember is the time difference as you cross into the different zones between Portugal and Spain. If I remember rightly, it was an hour.
